Anyone know where i can get a clutch alignment tool handy? or if not, what does everyone else use. I was thinking the end of a broom handle!

Got the release bearing, flywheel and clutch put on today!! It was pretty easy to do, just worried that the clutch is aligned properly.

Gave it a clean!! Also used a can of compressed air to blow all the dirt away! That's good think'n that is :thum:



The release bearing goes on easy. This is a picture of the underneath, easier to get the bottom clip in first, then the top.

Next, the clutch. Grease up the gearbox shaft first with the small tube of grease that comes with it, turning the shaft as you go.



Fit the pedal and slide it back and fourth to grease the inside of the
pedal hole where the shaft goes, then wipe off any excess grease.



Then take it back off and its ready to be put onto the clutch.

Flywheel. I gave it a good clean first with de-greaser, and did the bolts too.


De-greaser.



Blasted some dirt and dust away from the engine using the compressed air as i was waiting for the de-greaser to work.


Cleaned up the flywheel.


Can't see the difference much in the photo, but now when i pick it up, my fingers don't get dirty!! :thum:


Cleaned up the bolts too.


Fitted the flywheel and bolted it on!



Now the clutch!!

Pressure plate.


Pressure plate with pedal in it. The pedal has "TM side" written on one side so you know which way round it goes. I worried about that for about 5 minutes until i saw it written haha!


Used part of a trolly jack as an alignment tool with masking tape wrapped around it to make it thicker.


Fitted the clutch onto the flywheel by lining up the 3 metal pins on the flywheel, then after finding out the trolly jack piece was useless, i used a broom handle! :redface: Then screwed in the bolts and tightened them diagonally.


...and done!! ::


Not sure if its completely aligned properly as there was a small bit of play using the broom handle as an alignment tool, so took a few picks as much in line as i could with the camera and clutch, the shadows and angles are throwing me off. Opinions anyone??





Also, a friend has an SSIII BEAMS, so i had an opportunity to take some pics of the engine bay for reference









More updates soon. Off to the scrap yard during the week for more bits. Happy Halloween :thum:

cant wait for mine to begin....

I was about to start giving the engine bay a clean today and work around the engine. I started taking bits out like the window washer reservoir and the ps pump reservoir, the timing belt side mount. Then i took off the air intake on the 1.3 engine, then decided i was sick of looking at the old engine still in the engine bay, and that it was coming out today, in pieces if necessary haha.

Disconnected the window washer and ps pump reservoir, unbolted them and took them out. Then took out the engine mount.



A couple of the bolts holding the ps pump to the chassi, broke off! I'll have to drill them out.



Here i had a chance to fit the rav4 mount to see if it fits. I noticed the holes don't line up 100%. One side is off just a few millimeters, so some work will have to be done to that mount. Also the gear box side mount (avensis) will have to have some work done to it too, but more on that later with pictures. Today i focused on getting the engine bay clear.


I decided to take off the air intake...



Then the full engine loom, all labeled off course



Then to make life easier for myself, i took the gearbox off 7 bolts around the gearbox, and 1 underneath it (.


Used a crow bar to wedge it free from the engine...



Wiggled it free from the engine, (This is where my two arms came in really handy!! :thum: )


And again, this rear mount caused some wiggle problems, as it hoped back into the hole on the cross member, so pryed that free, then jacked up the car on the gearbox side, and dragged it out...



Engine bay, minus one gearbox ::


Now the engine. with the car still jacked up on the gearbox side. I unbolted some bits and pieces like the ps pump bracket on the front of the engine because i planned to lay the engine flat on the exhaust manifold side (front) so its not as high, then drag it out the gearbox side.
First, i wiggled the engine off the crate it was sitting on, to minimize height...


Then pulled the crate out...

I put down a work mat and and tilted the engine forward onto it...



The alternator is still on the engine, couldn't get at one off the bolts when it was in the engine bay, and one of them are pretty worn so i left it on, but if anyone is getting an engine out the "have no mercy" way, i recommend taking the alternator off, because the top bolt where the wires screw on got caught on the front of the corolla chassi and wouldn't let go like it was frigg'n fighting me for the engine haha . But if you can jack the car up hire, then theres no need to worry about it. I had the car up as high as the trolly jack would go, and a car stand beside it in case it dropped slightly!!! So, out came the engine at last

...and just in time too. I had just pulled it out when it started pissing!! Threw a cover over it and had a break

I then dragged it to the side of the house onto a crate with the gearbox and air intake and covered it up with a weather sheet. If anyones looking to buy a precfectly working 1.3 xli gearbox, starter, air intake, exhaust manifold, ps pump, alternator and one 4efe engine (that needs piston rings)...pm me!! Also have the drive shafts, rad and other bits.


Empty engine bay. Im going to clean the whole thing and put the rad and charcoal filter in.


Took out the old charcoal filter, ready for the new one.




Then i gave the engine cradle a good clean and called it a day.


I have some bits to get from the scrapyard,and also i want to have those engine mounts ready to go too, so that when i hire the engine cradle i can get it fitted in one day :thum: More updates soon!! ::
