PostSubject: cold air box question   cold air box question EmptyTue Jun 12, 2012 10:08 am

hi guys,

im going to be relocating my battery to the boot of the car, so im going to have quite abit of room in the front..

so i thought about making a cold air box where the filter could sit like this

cold air box question Cab_de10
cold air box question Cab_pr10
cold air box question Cab_av10

what material should i use to make it?

and then wrap all the pipes for air filter with this stuff

I like the idea. Would sheet metal or aluminum be an option? I don't know much about metal work myself...

What about a flow through box, where the air passes through and stays cold rather than heat up in the box?

Can you mount the filter in the wing then fun a feed pipe to the AFM?.

I mounted my filter there and run a flexible plastic pipee to join to charger intake

.cold air box question 20VFX014

Not a good picture to show it [will get better pics] there's a black plastic pipe behind battery.

I know what you mean but a proper cold air box where the temp is always low would be better..
Then wrap all induction pipes with heat wrap/insulation, and finally remove the heating element off the throtyle body.

All this will help bring more power from engine..

Plus the battery in the boot will help with weight distribution

on another note your engine bay is awesone!! So clean

Not in a Corolla, but you get the idea:

cold air box question 2012-02-12092303
Factory

cold air box question 2012-02-12105146
New alloy intake pipe + pod in sealed box (with rubber seals around the edges AND around the hole for the filter to stop rattles)

cold air box question 2012-02-12105156
From the front with the headlight removed - note air comes up from behind the front bumper, could be assisted with a duct if required, but completely separate from engine bay air

cold air box question 2012-02-12105645
With lid attached - could easily paint black for stealth look

The headlight goes back in, I just took it out to remove the snorkel and show what the inside of the box looked like.

hmm so your still willing to go for a mod that could give you little to no performance gains over the stock setup?

yes i would,
the temperatures here are alot lower than in australia, and therefore the air going in to the cold air box would have to be lower compared to the guys in australia.

plus i will be removing the the coolant pipes from under the throttle body, the coolant going into the throttle will be the same temp as the rest of the coolant system which will be 86 C, so removing the pipes will make a great improvement as the air going through the throttle body will not be getting heated up.

Anything to help performance im willing to do.

Well ya'knowwwwww, he does have a 3SGE. Just because CAI's have differing performance gains and losses in the 4A engines, doesn't mean it wouldn't help Ishaq's. Besides, if he is relocating his battery, why not try it. It would probably be better than the SRI he has on there anyways.

Remember that the coolant flowing through the T/B also controls the cold-idle valve, if you remove the hoses you'll have to find a way to fool the ISCV/IAC to stop you constantly being on cold idle
