Safe Driving Speeds....Passed by Grey AE101

So I was travelling along the highway with the cruise set at 100 kph (speed limit). I wasn't travelling the speed limit because of the speed limit, but more to save gas by keeping the rpms down (even though it was running at about 3200 to 3500 rpm at 100kph).

Then out of left field, another corolla passed me doing 120 kph. I was excited to see another ae101 so I stepped on it to keep up with it to start a AE101 convoy lol but then it turned off before my exit and I felt lonely again lol

But to the point, my engine was screaming over 4000 rpm at 120 kph....So my question is, what kind of steady rpm rate can my engine handle? or how fast can I go without blowing my engine? ...Just curious? I wouldn't want to go any faster then 120 anyway, it was a bit scary on my stock rusted suspension lol

I've hit 180kmh on the speedo but I dont know how accurate that is at high speed, I have the 1.3 16v 4e-fe

I've hit an indicated 200 in mine (Aus speedos go all the way up to 200 just about hitting redline in 5th so couldn't really get much faster, not something I'd do again unless on a private race track (and even then it'd need a long straight to get there)

i did 230 in my ae101 when i had the turbo that is yeah but anyway i was topping out in 5th mine sits about 3700 at 120 and thats the speed i drive at normally and ive being driving it like that for about 1 1/2 years and no problems with the old engine before i replaced it with the current 4age i had a 4afe+t prior and it was sweet as at 120 as i said 3700 no problem so about 110-115 you shoulnt have any problems

ive done maximum 165 kph from my 2000cc 8v diesal....with downpiping and a tune up it might hit 170

Yea, mines a 4afe. plus its a 3 speed auto lol. Sounds like I am safe to cruise at 120-130 kph if I should ever need to on the highway.

I would love a manual. I miss using a clutch. I probably dont even remember how to drive standard lol.

but I have other priorities like suspension, exhaust and bodywork.

I've only ever driven manual (except for the odd hire-car or work pool car), and all of my missus's cars have been manual too (even the Soarer). Autos are getting better and better, but at the end of the day I like the mechanical nature of a proper manual and the extra control it imparts, and will almost always choose a manual version if available

I agree with autos getting better but no matter what in an auto you can never just put your foot down in 5th and just slowly or quickly accelerate up to a good passing speed in an auto it either shifts down when i dont want it to or when i do it takes to long and then when it does shift down it jumps into the gear with about 1000 rpm left in the gear so yeah manual all the way

At 100 kph, my car maintains about 2100-2300 RPMs. Just below the first increment after the 2 RPM mark. But I have a 1.8 which I think has one more gear than the 1.6.

I'd love to have a manual too! But I can definitely appreciate an auto. I drive in extremely heavy traffic to and from work. No matter how many times I do it, it is still exhausting after a long day. Having an auto means I got one less thing to add to my fatique. Plus, no human error = longevity for the transmission. Being a college student and this being my only means of transportation, I can't afford any reliability issues.

Thats very true Kenny, autos are very convenient in heavy traffic. My friend stalled his civic the other day in heavy traffic trying to take off, and it made me realize how lucky I am lol.

Plus if you ever need to, you can always downshift your gear selector into 2nd if you need some quick acceleration. I love jamming it down to 2nd right at about 70 kph and passing somebody accelerating up to about 100 - 110 kph and just listening to my baby scream.

No worries about 4k mate, the engine is meant to run at 6-7k RPMs! But it's the tranny... 3 speeds, no wonder! Well that's perfectly normal. Mine was 4-speed auto, so it ran much better on the highway (low RPMs)

Just to add my 2c worth - I used to have an ordinary 86 Corolla with just your bottom of the line 4-AGE and it would happily cruise in fifth on 140 kph - I used to sit around 120 - 160 and 3800rpm to 4500rpm. I drove it like that for well over a year and never had a single problem with the engine. They'll go forever and a day.
